  It could be a faulty card, as you have mentioned, it would overheat often and might have damaged some of the components , possibly the display ram. If the drivers indeed have mixed versions, you can make use of Driver Fusion > to remove and clean old drivers.
  
  Re-install the card with latest driver then download and do a burn-in test with these utilities:
  
  Furmark
  
  GPU Shark (for monitoring the card)
  
  Keep an eye on the temperature and fan speed, post results when done.

  The GPU doesnt currently have a working fan - i unplugged it because the bearing was lose and it made a lot of noise i then stuck an old CPU fan ontop and monitored the temperature with GPU Monitor and it was actually cooler than it was with the faulty fan - it was sitting on 40 idle

  Graphics cards nowadays have average max temperatures of 100-105 degrees Celsius. You might want to add a fan on there, my GTX560 goes from 35 idle to about 74 max load with fan at about 60%. Once the card starts to overheat, it is bad, and will get damaged and cause BSOD's. See screenshot. Card is also overclocked to GTX560 Ti speeds.

  Hey Christo sorry for the late reply only got back from holiday 2 days ago!
  
  I am guessing that the GPU is the problem because since i've had the 8800GTX in i have no BSOD or any crashes!
  
  I dont entirely understand what the problem is in this case, the card with my custom fan on sits at about 40 idle and 70 loaded
  
  Do you think it might be a driver related issue?
