Hey guys I have the following rig:
x58A ud3R
i7 920
3x2gb tripple channel 1333mhz
My Problem is the graphics; should I get a single hd 5970 with a 700w psu or get a single 5870 with a psu that can handle an additional 5870 in the near future?
In other words a hd 5970 or cf 5870s?
Any suggestions are welcome, thanks!
Hi there JulsMcFuls, and welcome to PCDoctors !wave
While SLi and Crossfire initially sounded like great ideas, the general consensus is that they're more trouble than they're worth, and way too expensive. Getting a more powerful single card is recommended.
I tried SLi in my machine, and I had endless driver problems. Also, with two graphics cards, you double your chance of hardware failure.
I wholeheartedly agree with morgue here.
Some apps/games don't support it or it's a real hassle to set up, meaning you're stuck with single card performance anyway...which would be the 5870 and not 5970 which means a performance loss actually. Not to mention the price difference.
I triconcur. It is far less hassle to get 1 powerful graphics card.
With SLI/Crossfire one runs the risk of diminishing returns vs cost.

That does make a lot of sense, think I'll go with the hd 5970 then! =)
Thanks a lot for the input, I really appreciate it!
