  You might want to maybe try install plain vanilla ubuntu and then install the mythbuntu packages thereafter (basically the same thing in the end).
  
  TBH your issues sound rather perplexing, I'll try wrap my head around them and do some reading on it.

  You may want to also try Mint. It is based on Ubuntu but it plays mp3's etc straight out of the box. (More n00b friendly). It also looks a bit nicer and has one or two nice touches. I just prefer not to use it, because I can make my vanilla Ubuntu just as awesome on my own without all the other stuff. :)
