Nothing wrong with your methodology.
1) Step 1 is correct, thats the way to go. You might possibly have to make an additional partition of swap.
2)None needed, when you install Ubuntu, it will automatically install a boot loader (Grub) which will allow you to select which OS you would like to boot.
3)Install is good.
4) Self explanatory.
Tips:
*Run the live CD first to check that your hardware works as intended.
*Make sure windows is installed first. This is important because installing windows after you have installed Linux will totally fsck up your boot loader as apparently there is no other OS except windows.
*When you are installing Ubuntu, and creating your partitions, remember to set the mount point for your ubuntu parititon when you create it. This is done by typing: "/" without quotes into the "Mount point:" field.
*Everything else should happen by itself and you should have a fully operational Ubuntu box within 20-25minutes of starting the process.
*You may want to unplug your Lan cable (if you connect to the internet via one) to stop Ubuntu from checking for updates when finishing off the install process (I just prefer it because it's faster to leave it unplugged)
Thats about all I can think of atm. I've done this so many times it boggles the mind. If you have any questions just ask :)
Thanks Hawk, that's brilliant. Tonight I'll download the ISO and give it a bash and see what happens :-)
Thanks Christo, that's a great help. I've downloaded mythbuntu, hopefully tonight I get a chance and I'll give it a bash.

Not as well as I wanted it to go, numerous "challenges" which are confusing me:
1. Couldn't get the PC to boot of flash or CD for some strange reason. Even when changing the boot options to ONLY CD (no HDD or flash) it would still boot off the HDD straight into Win7.
2. When booting into windows with the mythbuntu CD inserted windows isn't a happy camper. Explorer basically bombs out during boot up.
3. When inserting the CD whilst in windows everything freezes for a while and then later comes right.
4. When using the flash drive in Win7, and then running the mythbuntu exe file I am presented with 3 options:
Demo mythbuntu (reset PC with CD/flash inserted and etst out the OS)
Install with Windows (install myth buntu with windows and use GRUB to decide which OS to boot into upon startup
Mythbuntu fresh isntall (which will remove the Windows OS).
I tried the demo and install with windows options. The demo doesn't work at all (see point 1 above). Installing with windows starts off fine, however, halfway into the install it starts downloading the mythbuntu ISO all over again (700mb) off of the interwebs! This is strange as I already have the ISO. I tried copy and pasting the ISO (exact replica of what it's trying to DL) into the folders where it was downloading the ISO into, still no joy. It keeps on trying to download another full 700mb which of course I'd like to avoid!
You might want to maybe try install plain vanilla ubuntu and then install the mythbuntu packages thereafter (basically the same thing in the end).
TBH your issues sound rather perplexing, I'll try wrap my head around them and do some reading on it.
