As a power user I wouldn't get myself caught working on anything with reduced functionality. However for workstations this is perfect. No DVD playback and media centre isn't available therefore you won't be doing anything but work.
Multiple monitor functionality really isn't the biggest issue as this really isn't the most common setup around. Most people running multiple monitors are power users like myself and would by default have a better OS than the starter edition. OTOH does this include the VGA out on notebooks? Because that would be rather troublesome should the LCD get damaged and you need to get info off of it and don't want to take out the drive, most likely to keep the warrantee in tact.
Removing the limit really did make this package more attractive but when I buy an OS i wouldn't buy it for the price I would buy it for the functions I need. If it isn't sufficient there is no point in purchasing it in the first place.
Win7 Starter is great for those with a limited budget. But I don't see many people going out and buying it. If you're so desperately poor that you can't afford the slightly more expensive Home version(s), then you would either a) not actually have a computer in the first place, or b) be using a free operating system, like Ubuntu.
The only places that you'll see Win7 Starter edition are on computers in educational institutions or in places where it has been bought in bulk to install on a lot of similar computers (related to charity work, etc).
Yes, Win7 is what Vista would have been if Microsoft hadn't kicked it out of the nest so early.
Well, I've bought a copy of Starter edition for our R&D testing bench and I'm currently drilling it HARD! It's unbreakable as there's nothing really to break!!! LOL. For the application I'm using it for (Security Surveillance Workstation) it's PERFECT! And the supplied OEM System builder pack included with it helps me distribute pre-configured images over the network. Here I can change the wallpaper ;)
It out performs a XP machine with the exact same hardware. My video conversion time is a lot quicker! And the biggest kick is that we saver over R400 on OS costs per unit sold.
All I can say for the first time really in my LIFE being a Mac fan, Well Done Micro$uck
