  Yep, toppling Operating Systems is my speciality
  
  So my next issue: getting Virtual PC to run on Win7. I want to use Virtual PC so that I can run some WinXP programs that I need to execute, like DScaler. But it seems that the Win7 'version' of Virtual PC needs hardware support. In other words, your CPU needs to have built-in support for virtualisation.   It was easier to find than I thought it would be. It's a pity only Intel CPU's are listed in the article but it's a start at least.

  My office PC's CPU, a quad core Intel Q8200 Yorkfield (purchased about 5 months ago), doesn't have hardware-assisted virtualisation. What are the chances that my 3-and-a-half year old AMD 64X2 4400+ (Toledo core) will have it? I'll post results later when I get home...

  I just checked, and I have a revision E Athlon :(
  
  So chances are slim that my home machine supports XP Mode. However, XP mode ('native' virtualisation support) is just designed to alleviate a large chunk of the overhead experienced with the usual emulation of another operating system. Frankly, I don't care about that overhead (unless it stops me from being able to use DScaler). Which means that I should still be able to install Virtual PC and run WinXP in 'non-XP mode' (or non-native mode). Yes, it will be quite a bit slower.... but it should still work!
  
  Anyway, I'll screencap SecurAble when I get home and post the results. I porbably won't have the time tonight, but I'm determined to get WinXP running on Virtual PC!

  VirtualBox VirtualBox should run on any recent CPU, but it does best with high-end processors that support hardware virtualization enhancements such as Intel's VT-x and Advanced Micro Devices' AMD-V.

  Ah, thanks for that link Christo. I'm downloading the 68.6mb Windows version of VirtualBox right now.

  While I would rather create a separate "VirtualBox on Windows 7" thread, here are the results of me trying to get DScaler to run by emulating Windows XP on Windows 7 using VirtualBox:
  
  
  First of all, kudos to the VirtualBox team, it installs and runs beautifully. I had no problems running it no matter what I did (including having all sorts of visual-effects-driven applications running on Windows 7 while running VirtualBox and installing the guest operating system, Windows XP). These 4 screenshots show me setting up VirtualBox, and preparing to install WinXP:
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  The next four screenshots show me installing the guest operating system. It was a fairly painless procedure, and took about 15 to 20 minutes. The only problem I had initially was mounting the WinXP SP3 image, but that was probably because I told VirtualBox to use one of my 'fake' DaemonTools optical drives, whereas I should have specified either my 'real' DVD drive, or just the .ISO image file directly. Anyway, as you can see, WinXP installed without a hitch:
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  Now, the moment of truth. I tried installing an nVidia graphics driver (since I have an nVidia graphics card), but was told that no compatible hardware was found. Same thing when I then tried to install the WDM (video capture) driver. The reason being:
  
  
  
  Seems VirtualBox uses it's own emulated video card... which is peculiar.
  
  And although DScaler installed fine, it didn't seem to like running on an emulated operating system. Here's the error it crashes with when I try to run it on the guest operating system:
  
  
  
  But even if DScaler could run properly, it would not find an appropriate video capture device, because the WDM driver could not be installed. So, game over with regards to using DScaler (or *any* video capture software) in an emulated version of Windows XP on VirtualBox.

  Can anyone remind me - does Microsoft Virtual PC use the Host operating system's hardware? In other words, if I have a nVidia graphics card running on the host operating system, does the guest operating system 'see' that graphics card?
