LOL, I see that 6 of the last 11 threads in this technical section are mine.... am I the only one suffering endlessly with PC crap?
Anyway, I deciced my media PC was performing like crap so it was time to do a full format and re-install (as one does) and here is my saga:
Alright, so, i whack in my XP CD, reset the PC, change boot options in the bios, boot from CD, do a quick format of the primary C drive and install XP. All goes fine, until it reset's and I get the following error message just under the post screen:
A disk read error occurred
Press Ctrl + Alt + delete to restart
So, i figure it's a faulty hard drive, so i go thru the same process again however this time I let the installation do a full format of the HDD, it took a while and then all came back down to the same result. Thus I figure it could be my original windows CD. I dig around and find my SO's XP CD, try it with hers (and a quick format), same result again.
So I figured the primary drive was dying (that would explain the performance issues too), so I take it out and leave the 1T drive with about 200Gigs spare as the only drive connected and install XP onto that (no partitions or formats) and I get exactly the same thing. I tried it with both CD's as well.
Thus I figure it's the drive controller on the motherboard, so i do a CMOS reset to have a nice fresh BIOS. I try the installation again on the 1T drive, same issue. Then slapped the primary drive back in only to have exactly the same problem....
So, any ideas? I guess my motherboard is on the way out, however I don't know how to test it?
What are your thoughts/suspicions?
