Sorry WingnuT, but your idea won't work for PCD. It may work for other sites, but PCD is a different kettle of fish. Forcing people to register to view posts will drive away more than it will attract.

As I've said in the past, people visit PCD for two reasons: to gain answers to technical problems, and to socialise in a friendly environment. For most, the first reason is sufficient - they don't have the time to spend getting to know people online. They've got their answer, and off they go, until the next time they have problems. There's nothing wrong with this approach, it's human nature, and pretty much expected.

Some of us, however, have the time, inclination, and internet access to devote more of our resources to socialising online. It's those people that stick around, visiting the site regularly and making posts.

It is a pity, however, that the type of people that like to spend their time in online forums don't pay PCD more attention, because if they did, they'd see that it's one of the friendlier forums to be found.

That said, there are other great forums here in SA, like SystemShock, which has the advantage of having been established for years now (whereas PCD is only a year old). And as much as we might like it to be otherwise, Real Lifeā„¢ dictates that we don't have endless amounts of time to devote to online forums - usually, just one or two suffice. So if someone is already a member of NAG or SystemShock or ZoopedUp or Prophecy or wherever else, there's little reason for them to jump ship, so to speak. Unless of course they find that the forum in question is either irritating or doesn't serve their needs.

I can't conceive of a way to boost membership, apart from word-of-mouth or advertising (or starting our own monthly gaming magazine... *cough*)

We have seen several members joining over the last year that have shown that they like the environment that we provide, and are prepared to stick around and post regularly or semi-regularly (eg. Enigma_2k4, Dade_182, Venom Soup, Blackwolf, etc).

Unfortunately, we often miss seeing others, like Kensai. This cannot be attributed to any bias against PCD, but rather we need to realise that the realities of life manage to keep some folks from visiting as regularly as they might like to.

PS, Siversmith, check your post - you left out the word "don't" in a rather important place

PPS. These kind of posts do not help our membership situation. If I visit a forum and see the members moaning about how few members there are, and trying to figure out how to get more, it immediately raises questions in my mind about the usefulness of the forum. Any inclination to join that forum dissipates. So let's either shelve these discussions, or have them in members-only areas from now on, please.

I agree with what is being said here. Very often when am looking for help or something and I have to either pay or register to see what is in the forum etc, just puts me off. PCD should stay the way it is.

The forum should stay the way it is, the way it always has been. I know for a lot of us when we want to find an answer to a problem fast, we google search it. That search will bring up tons of forums where somebody has the same problem and if you click on it, you can read more about the problem, and see if there is a posted solution. That is how PCD works, and how it should always work. Just like how Christo said, anybody can come look at the content and find solutions, but only members can ask the questions.

I don't see any problem with the number of members, there are plenty of regulars that have always been here... Raz, Morgue, TT, Siver, Stasja, and tons more... and on top of that there's the semi-regulars, like myself. This forum has a ton of Threads and posts... it's very friendly and personal. If you get tons more people, the forums would be less personal. I like it how it is.
