7MC and WMP11 can't play MP3 or WMA files

Hi all,

I'm very confused. All of a sudden my 7MC or WMP11 won't play MP3 or WMA files. However it still plays FLAC files no problem. MP3 and WMA files play perfectly on Media Centre Studio.

I'm tried various audio decoders with the Media Centre Decoder Utility, all no help.

I downloaded and installed the latest codecs (K-Lite codec pack 6.1). Also no chance. Video's are fine in either 2 or 5.1 channel sound, just MP3's and WMA's have a problem.

Nothing has changed (that I can put my finger on), I installed no new apps, drivers or windows updates. Just booted up the PC one morning and nothing. Please help, I really am at a loss at to what to do further.

I am running Widows 7, with 7MC. Using media browser and various other 7MC apps. Sound card is a Creative X-Fi Xtreme audio and I've never had issues before, I presume this is software related.

Anyone have any ideas?

Yeah, sorry that was a bit dof. LOL

It says something along the lines of "MC cannot find the specified file or it is missing or corrupt. Please also check that you have the correct codec's installed."

Now I know it's not the files as the same files play fine in other media players and FLAC files in the same location play fine in 7MC or WMP11.

Hmmmm.....This genuinely might require you to completely uninstall WMP. Maybe there is a place where codecs are stored (like the "fonts" directory) and those codecs are corrupted. Maybe by uninstalling WMP and installing it again you can fix the problem. But this problem sounds very very strange.

Um, I am not sure how but it fixed itself.... LOL, but the PC is mis-behaving a bit so I think a format is in order.... :-)

Ha ha that normally fixes just about everything. But should only be used as a last resort.
